Welcome to the Black Knitter website! This is a space of beloved community. That means that love is what matters the most. Everyone is welcome here, because everyone is loved here.
I started this beloved community to open up conversation and learning about how race impacts the making community. Why? I’m a PhD sociologist and a Certified Lay Minister in the United Methodist Church. As a sociologist who studies race, I know a lot about the scientific research on the relationship between race and our lived experience. As a Certified Lay Minister, and a follower of Jesus, I have an obligation to lead with love in everything I do. If we are going to create making spaces where everyone feels like they belong, we have to talk about, and educate ourselves, about race, systemic racism, and allyship.
I will be working with Mr. Black Knitter (who is an IT professional) to add to this site. Like all good Methodists, I’m moving onward toward perfection! I’m not there yet! So check back to see updated resources. If you are one of my knitting students, click on the tab for your class to find links to helpful knitting tutorials for all of the techniques we talked about in class.
